Lorraine Robinson from Not Just Travel gives us her expert Travel Tips on where you should head on your next European City Break?
City breaks are the perfect getaway for everyone. Whether you’re wanting a weekend away with the girls, a romantic trip with your partner or just to get out and explore on your own. There’s practically a city for every kind of trip you can imagine.
Lorraine has rounded up her favourite hot-spots for a European city break. Where will you be heading next?
Budapest has become one of Europe’s best-loved short breaks, and it’s easy to see why. A trip here won’t set you back too much. Plus the bonus of it being an easy-on-the-wallet destination when you’re out there.
Take a wander around the cultural sights in the morning. Head to Parliament and gaze over the river Danube as you take in the Shoes on the Danube memorial. In the afternoon head to one of the many Roman Baths and soak in the abundance of hot springs.
Rumour has it, it’s also the best cure for what Hungarians call a macskajaj (cat’s wail) – hangover!
The City of Lights should be on everyone’s list. From iconic architecture and boutique shopping to divine food, Paris is a place that has it all. France’s reputation for its cuisine precedes it, whether you’re wanting a shabby chic café tucked in the corner of the hustle and bustle, or a Michelin-starred restaurant. You can truly eat your way around Paris. A trip isn’t complete without a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower or Arc de Triomphe, proving their fame for world-famous monuments.
The Danes rank amongst the world’s most happy people. So why wouldn’t you head out to chase the buzz of this city?
A place that’s constantly evolving, its mantras include sustainable living, booming restaurant scenes and a topping of culture. Tivoli Gardens is a must. Located just down from City Hall you can expect to experience the magic that captured the likes of Hans Christian Andersen as well as Walt Disney. Walt even found the inspiration to his own Disney World here.
Head to Strøget and shop ‘til you drop at Copenhagen’s largest shopping area, with an array of budget-friendly chains to some of the world’s most expensive brands.
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
This urban paradise is full of character. You can’t walk a mile without bumping into an artful masterpiece or a hidden gem. From treasure-packed museums, vintage shops and quirky cafes, Amsterdam is known as a cosy city that is more easily experienced rather than defined. The shimmering canals line the city interlinked with drawbridges, enabling beauty to be found around every corner. You can’t help but soak up in the atmosphere when you amble through the lively squares, taking in the history of a time gone by.
This fairy tale city is one of Europe’s best-preserved, cobbled lanes and photogenic canals make for the perfect Instagram shot. Chocolatiers are found down every street making it a chocoholics dream. But it offers more than that. Markt is the main square and the heart of the old town. Lined with restaurants and bars the centrepiece is the Traditional medieval buildings, dominated by the Belfort, an 83-metre-high belfry with 47 bells. You can even try the weird and wonderful makings at Bruges Beer Experience. A fresh combination of interactivity, innovative technologies and the stimulation of sense!
