The Yanks are Back in Saddleworth Premier event set to deliver a fantastic Summer spectacle once again! The usual military display and convoy will once again take place on the Sunday, which is always popular with the crowds, which will include a military vehicle convoy through Uppermill High Street on Sunday. Celebrations are dedicated to the fifilming of the movie “YANKS” which starred Richard Gere and Vanessa Redgrave. Scenes from the 1979 fifilm are created in some of the Saddleworth villages, including Dobcross, Uppermill and also Stalybridge. A lot of the ‘extras’ used in the classic were chosen from these and surrounding villages. A scene from the fifilm which involves two soldiers getting soaked is replayed outside the Swan Inn in Dobcross every year. TheYanks weekend is a celebration of this great fifilm and everyone certainly enjoys recreating this wartime atmosphere. This Summers Yanks weekend hopes once again to allow locals and visitors alike to come together to enjoy this years festivities which will take place on the weekend of the 11th and 12th August. The annual event is now in its 18th year and is still a big draw on the local calendar and as predicted visitors from all over the country will come together to enjoy this popular three day spectacle amidst hopefully favourable weather conditions. Saddleworth’s shops and pubs will transform themselves to replicate the 1940s, as the streets will be fifilled with flflags and bunting. It is hoped celebrations will be as impressive as in previous years, with many locals entering into the spirit of things and sporting traditional war time costumes. Over night the valley transforms itself into a scene from bygone era. The weekend always proves to be a success and everyone gets together to get into the spirit of the things with sing-a-longs, re-enactments and even participating in 1940’s style dancing to help everyone get everyone in the mood. Music will be provided by Max Debon and the Debonaires, as well as Paul ‘Peaky’ Shelby and Trina from the Backstep Boogie Club who will be spinning the discs at Saddleworth School.
