FRUITY FAVOURITES FOR THE FESTIVE FRIVOLITIES!
By Tim Naylor (Saddleworth Wine Vault)
Merry Christmas everybody! I hope your preparations are well under way. And don’t forget the wine! We’ve chosen a ‘Fantastic Four’ to make your celebrations go with a bang, fifizz or maybe just a slurp.
A very elegant nose of lemon, citrus, stonefruit and white flflower aromas evolve into a fresh, supple palate of toasted brioche, hazlenuts and fresh citrus. Gentle acidity on the fifinish makes you come back for more. Pairs well with all manner of canapes, and makes an excellent aperitif. Superb!
Avancia Godello – Spain, 2016 £18.95
At this time of year, we often get asked what is the most popular wine at Christmas. Well,‘Do I have to eat my Brussels Sprouts?’ was a particular favourite of mine when I was younger.
Mind you, as somebody who was indeed, mildly dyslexic as a child, it always seemed to be getting me into a bit of trouble. I mean, it was hardly my fault that all my letters to Father Christmas began with....‘Dear Satan’
And then there was the time I got into terrible trouble for doing my Christmas shopping too early. I didn’t really see the harm in it, until the nice policeman explained that ‘early’ doesn’t mean before the shop opens.
Anyway, it’s Christmas. And as a new female Doctor Who appears on our screens we think it’s important that we do our bit to keep up with the current zeitgeist of female empowerment. So, with some help
from the ‘Alaska Department of Fish and Game’, we can exclusively reveal the following breaking news story.
During the summer both male and female reindeer grow antlers. Male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. However female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, all Santa’s reindeer, as depicted with antlers, must be female! That might explain why Rudolph was never allowed to join in any of their games.
But I digress - on to the wines....
Ruinart Blanc de Blancs – Champagne £50
Top notch Champagne from the well renowned Ruinart house. Made purely from Grand Cru Chardonnay, this is a fantastic way to start your Christmas feast.
Beautiful white wine from Galicia in north west Spain. Made from 100% Godello grapes from 40 yr old vines grown in a chalky, mineral soil. Tropical fruit aromas predominate on the nose – pineapple, pear, mango and grapefruit - with a touch of vanilla and nutmeg from the seven months oak ageing.
Plump and unctuous on the palate, this is a sumptuous delight of mouth
expressive nose of red fruits, in particular cherry and raspberry. There’s also some stone fruit inflfluence and a hint of garrigue herbiness. On the palate, it is deliciously rounded and smooth, with tart raspberries toned down by silky cherry notes. A long, rounded fifinish seals the deal.
Roses aren’t just for summer! Give it a go.

watering tropical fruit flflavours, with a lovely balance of gentle acidity, well integrated oak and a long, satisfying, minerally fifinish. A fantastic alternative to a white Burgundy for your festive feast!
Whispering Angel Rose – France, 2017 £16.95
One of the jewels in the Cotes de Provences crown – this is an elegant blend of Cinsault, Syrah and Grenache, from Caves d’Esclans. The grapes are grown in the La Motte region of Provence, with the hot summer temperatures tempered by cooling sea breezes to provide optimum growing conditions. In the glass the wine is a gorgeous coral pink colour, with a very
question at the top of the page! Pinot Noir combines beautifully with the traditional Christmas Turkey, and this is an absolute cracker from California. Produced by Fior di Sole in Napa Valley, this is a silkily seductive Pinot with oodles of flflavour. Plenty of typical cherry and raspberry on the nose with an earthy undertone and a hint of spice. Medium bodied on the palate, with notes of bramble fruit and cherries and a subtle sweet spice character. Raspberries and strawberries provide fresh acidity and give background support to the symphony of soft tannins. A silky mouthfeel and lingering fresh fruit flflavours make this wine one to savour and enjoy.
And don’t forget, we have a full range of wines and spirits to suit all tastes and budgets starting from just £6.95. Pop in and see us soon!
Wisishing everybody a very Merrrry Chrisistmasas and a Happy New Year!
