Sport and Wellbeing END OF A GREAT INNINGS FOR LOCAL CRICKETING LEGEND FORMER Lancashire cricketer Geoffff Clayton has died at the age of 80. Cup fifinal at Lords against a Kent side featuring cricket legend, Colin Cowdrey, future England skipper Mike Denness and other internationals,Alan Knott, Brian Luckhurst and Derek Underwood. Kent won by 32 runs with Geoff making just eight before being dismissed by Underwood.A few weeks later he played his fifinal game for Somerset and didn’t appear in the fifirst-class arena again having scored 6154 runs in 274 matches. Among the tributes paid was a tweet from Lancashire CCC saying:“Very sad to hear the passing of former Lancashire wicket keeper Geoff Clayton earlier in the week. Our thoughts are with his friends and family.” News of Geoff’s death has led to further tributes from friends and acquaintances throughout Mossley and Saddleworth. An old friend from his Mossley days said: “ He was certainly a character. Geoff was a no nonsense fella and a lot of people, including me, are going to miss him.” Mossley born Geoff passed away in September at the Holland Close sheltered housing facility in Delph. His funeral took place at St Thomas Church, Delph on Monday, October 15 at noon, followed by a commital at Hollinwood Crematorium which was offificiated by Malcolm Lorimer LCC Chaplin. Geoff’s career began at Micklehurst Cricket Club, who have sent condolences to his surviving family. He was one of four brothers: Frank, John (also known as Jack), and Derek. Geoff made his fifirst-class debut in 1957 playing for the Combined Services against Worcestershire, making his fifirst appearance for the Red Rose county in 1959. A right-handed batsman and excellent wicket keeper, he was awarded his county cap in 1960. He wasn’t retained by the Old Trafford club after the 1964 campaign and joined Somerset with whom he was also awarded a county cap in 1965. In just his fourth match he compiled a maiden century as night watchman against Middlesex. His innings of 106 was the highest score of his decade long fifirst-class career.The following season Geoff claimed 84 victims to become the leading wicket keeper in the English game. He also appeared in the 1967 Gillette Pictured: The Delph & Dobcross junior squad with all the trophies they’ve won during the 2018 season. DELPH & DOBCROSS CC JUNIORS EXCITING END TO AN INCREDIBLE SEASON The junior cricket teams at Delph & Dobcross CC have enjoyed an outstanding 2018 season.The club run three teams at junior level under 11s, under 13s and under 15s, all of whom play in the Huddersfifield Junior Cricket League. Under 11s were worthy winners of their league, winning 11 and only losing 1 of the 12 league games played. Similarly the under 13s were winners of their league, again winning 11 and losing only 1 of 12 league games.Their league position was only decided on the last game of the season when they managed to win away at previously undefeated Almondbury Wesleyans. very competitive league, winning 9 and losing 3 of their league games. As well as games within the Huddersfifield Junior League the club also had several players who represented Oldham at District cricket with a good level of success, the Oldham Under 11 District team retaining the Lancashire District Cup in a tense fifinal.
