OLDHAM & DISTRICT RIDING CLUB Pets Corner Summer Review By Heather Howe The summer has been a flflurry of activity, from our annual camp held at Sommerford Park, to team events, training events and shows. Our annual camp was held at Sommerford park in Congleton, where a record number of riders brought their horses for intense instruction, fun and camping. Our campers had an amazing time, braving extreme variations in weather, from sunburn to flflooded tents! Lots of memories were made with new and exciting experiences, conquering some big fences and having the opportunity to relax with friends. We must extend a huge thank you to our camp organisers......... Cathy & Charlie Heaven, who provided ODRC members with such a wonderful and enjoyable opportunity; ladies......... it was simply the best! Moving forwards through our schedule, we have had wonderful opportunities to experience an extensive programme of training, from dressage to show jumping at a new and upcoming equestrian venue......... Higher Counthill Farm. This facility and our event organisers have ensured that no matter what the good old weather of Blighty has thrown at us, we have still been able to march on with the training. Due to some recent ‘wet’ weather, it was decided to move an entire show up to Higher Counthill farm, which ensured that our event would continue to run despite our home venue Freizland arena being a tad moist! This particular show held qualififiers for Equifest, a national championship show, and I am pleased to report number of local riders qualifified for this national championship..........Watch this space! Our annual Jill Bradley Memorial one day event celebrated its 10th year this summer. Jill Bradley was a very active member of ODRC for many years, and this show was created to celebrate her memory. Jill held a special place in her heart for both eventing and charity work, so these shows have always raised money for one of her favourite charities: RDA- riding for the disabled (who now have a branch based in Saddleworth!), Christies and Cancer research UK. We are preparing for our fifinal showing show, which will determine the points leader board, not only for our annual presentation, but also for the Northern STARS championship. If you are interested in becoming a member of ODRC please check out our website ahead of next season! www.AroundSADDLEWORTH.co.uk 77
