Out and about Diggle Blues Festival 2019 By David Wood (festival organiser) There had been good weather for the last three years but the forecast was mixed. It is mainly an indoor festival so the rain can’t spoil it, but it is nice to have good weather to walk between venues. There was literally the odd spot of rain but it didn’t materialise into anything. The festival started on Thursday at the Gate Inn with a trio called Trilo3y, who have what must be one of the best guitarists from Greater Manchester in Jon Ingham. He did covers of Eric Clapton and Hendrix, including playing the guitar behind his head. We suspect he has gone down to the proverbial crossroads to sell his soul to the devil to play guitar that well.Vocalist Phil sang some original numbers including the humorous Buss Pass Blues. Lester on drums completed the trio. Paul Middleton’s Angst Band followed on at Diggle Band Club. No traditional 12 bar blues here but a more modern take on original songs of angst, anger, hurt and occasionally, humour. Friday saw the Mighty Revelators invited back to the band club in the fans’ favourite spot, and they showed why they had been so popular previously. Saturday had Mike “Dr Blue” McKeon from Brighton entertaining a laid back crowd on the banks of the Huddersfifield canal at Grandpa Greene’s, with his gravel voiced songs that sounded as if he was born to sing the blues. Part way through his act, as the sun broke through the clouds, he remarked “Diggle – I’ve fallen in love with this place!” (His status was later nearly elevated to sainthood when he lent his own Personal Address System to a band who turned up without theirs, thus saving the day). Saturday ended with the Big Wolf Band and Zoe Green blasting out a fusion of blues and rock to an appreciative band club audience. TheTwo Hats Blues Band started Sunday off with a pleasant mix of blues roots music, a hint of ragtime jazz and three part harmonies. Nick Bold and the Raging Sea gave us a mix of rock and blues, and original songs and covers, at a packed Diggle Band Club. The festival ended on a high with the unbelievably talented Paul Rose Band at a full Kilngreen Hall. With the tenth festival over successfully, work can start on the next one in January.
