Bohemian Rhapsody Review
By Mike Kemble
There aren’t many fifilms which catch the imagination of the viewing public but one recent release is causing quite a stir with both music fans and fifilm enthusiasts alike. Mike Kemble takes a look at the much anticipated Queen fifilm, Bohemian Rhapsody....
Anyone familiar with Rami Malek, who is probably best known as Elliot Alderson from the Netflflix series Mr. Robot, will be familiar with the intensity of has acting capabilities. His magnifificent cheek-bone structure and athletic physique give him another-worldly type of look and with a little bit of facial hair and costume design, you can see why he’s perfect to play Freddie Mercury in the up-and- coming fifilm biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. Out in UK cinemas from Wednesday 24 October, it charts the rise and life of the extraordinary lead singer of Queen, who became one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet.
As all hugely inflfluential and inspirational fifigures seem to face, Mercury’s life was full of light tinged with darker moments as he struggled with the pressure of fame and fortune and the egotistical sense of one’s self. His pursuit of singular stardom didn’t go as planned and the fifilm goes on to chart his personal journey culminating in his return to centre-stage with Queen again and their meteoric performance that literally rocked the world around the time of Live Aid, back in 1985.
Controversially, the fifilm has seen early criticism prior to its release in that it doesn’t portray Mercury’s sexuality and chooses to play lip service to his AIDS diagnosis and subsequent death. Malek has staunchly defended the fifilm against such claims and has a point when these sentiments were based on a one-minute trailer released earlier in the year. Hardly a complete view of things overall. It remains to be seen how successful the fifilm will be and only time will tell, but nobody can deny this rhapsodic story’s worth telling.
