The Optical Coherence Tomography scanner (OCT) is similar to ultrasound, but uses light waves instead of sound waves to penetrate the eyes tissue and create a picture from the wave reflflections. The advanced 3D OCT scan illustrates the different layers that make up the optic nerve, retina and cornea, which can be cross referenced with a digital photograph of the surface of the eye to pinpoint areas of concern. Spotting eye conditions Stephen Tighe, managing director, says ‘It’s really exciting to be able to enhance the standard of eye care provided with this sophisticated piece of equipment. The OCT creates a 3D picture of tissue behind the surface of the retina, allowing our optometrist to easily diagnose and refer customers to a specialist for further treatment, should this be required. ‘Since opening in Meltham in 2017 we have continuously invested in new technology as it has become available. It’s incredible how technology has developed and the 3D OCT scanner is the biggest single investment in ophthalmic equipment that we have made - around £30,000. ‘OCT equipment has historically only been available in hospitals, so the convenience of having the state-of-the-art technology in Meltham itself will be hugely benefificial for local people.‘ Changing lives and saving sight Dispensing Optician Sheryl Doe added:‘We held an in-store launch, www.AroundSADDLEWORTH.co.uk Health and beauty from
