Saddleworth WI Goes Digital
Even though Saddleworth WI can’t hold their usual meetings, not to mention the trips, events and workshops that are offered to members each month, they are keeping the membership entertained, informed and most importantly, for those living alone, connected by means of technology and social media.

JUNE MONTHLY MEETING
The group had their first Zoom Members Meeting on Wednesday 3rd June. Guest speaker, Beth Butcher from Fulham WI, talked to them about British Sign Language and taught them some basic phrases and the alphabet. It was a highly successful evening enjoyed by the members who took part. During the meeting, President, Pam Armstrong, conducted an on-screen poll to see what sort of future speakers would appeal to the members, and these are being booked for future meetings.
BOOK GROUP
Despite being able to post book reviews on the SWI Members Facebook page, the Saddleworth WI Book Group wanted more. As a result, the May meeting was held via Zoom. Sixteen members took part in the Zoom meeting when the book, The Poster Boy by N J Crosskey was discussed. The majority of people enjoyed the book describing it by using such words as:
unsettling, disturbing, riveting, worrying, shocking, scary, upsetting and an eye-opener. It was decided that most would recommend it and as usual, the book initiated a wider discussion.
ALPHABET PHOTO CHALLENGE
The photo challenge is proving to be a big hit with their members! For the first 26 days of June, every day, members are taking or posting a photo of something that represents the letters of the alphabet in order, eg June 1st = A, June 2nd = B, June 3rd = C etc. The range of photos has been amazing and seeing the new images each day has been very uplifting.
These are being posted on the Facebook Members Page or on the newly formed SWI Photo WhatsApp Group. No need for a fancy camera, just observation and imagination, which the members of Saddleworth WI have in abundance!
COMMUNITY PROJECTS
Saddleworth WI members have expanded our range of knitted and sewn items for donation to local hospitals and community. They have also enrolled in the #CakesofKindness initiative to bake and deliver 100 cakes to isolating and hard-working local recipients.
KEEPING IN TOUCH
An email newsletter goes out to members every couple of weeks, containing useful information and a few tips and light-hearted items to help members get through the days and weeks before they can get back to some form of normality. Their busy Facebook page features a weekly Virtual Walk with one clue per day and the answer revealed at the end of the week, a daily riddle and monthly book reviews.
When things get back to ‘normal’ Saddleworth WI meet on the First Wednesday each month 7 for 7.30 pm in the Oak Room of The White Hart, Stockport Road, Lydgate, OL4 4JJ. Visitors are very welcome with a small fee of £3. Contact us on 07763 028466 or visit us at www.saddleworthwi.com
Hope you all stay safe and look forward to when we can all be back together.
