A local chef comes close to winning the Great British Sausage Roll Off

A top chef from Oldham joined 20 other hopefuls as they battled it out in the 2020 Great British Sausage Roll Off at the Red Lion pub in Barnes, west London.

James Taylor, Head Chef and owner of The Bulls Head in Heyside joined the fight to take home the ultimate accolade in pastry-based snacks, which took place on Wednesday 5th February raising money for Hospitality Action.

Hosted by beer and food writer Melissa Cole, chefs from across the country descended on The Red Lion to create the ultimate sausage roll. This year’s judging panel included Heart FM DJ Lucy Horobin; two-Michelin-starred chef-patron, Paul Cunningham of Henne Kirkeby Kro in Denmark; head chef of one Michelin-star Petrus, Russell Bateman; and Michelin-starred chef-owner of Salt in Stratford upon Avon, Paul Foster.

Chefs from across the industry and country took part in the competition, hosted by licensees Claire Morgan and Angus McKean.

McKean said: “Every year, the Great British Sausage Roll Off competition gets bigger and better. This year was our strongest line-up ever. It was great to see the weird and wonderful combinations of pastry, filling and accompaniments the chefs created.

“I think the incredible judging panel we had this year is a testament to the status the Great Sausage Roll Off has among chefs across the UK and beyond. Had you told me, when we started in 2013, that there would be four Michelin stars on the judging panel I’d have said you’d been putting something dodgy in your sausage roll!”

Morgan added: “It was a fantastic night, which was quite chaotic, but great fun as always. The atmosphere was amazing, and we raised lots of money for Hospitality Action.”

After a hard-fought contest, the 2020 crown was eventually awarded to Alan Chilton from Bower Inn, Bridgwater. Although he came close, James only had great things to say about his fellow contestants;

“I was proud of my efforts and the way the sausage rolls came out. The other chefs were fantastic and I’m already planning what I need to do for next time. All in all, it was a great experience with great people to support a great cause.”
